2. The dishes are not properly covered. They attract flies which soil the foods. The sushi is not eaten immediately after it has been taken out from the fridge.
3. Mother uses the same chopping board for both raw and cooked foods.
If we do not pay attention to food hygiene, what may happen?
We may get food poisoning or suffer from the symptoms of some intestinal infectious diseases such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.
P.3
Would you eat these foods? Why or why not?
Foods are easily contaminated and are prone to bacterial infection.
P.4
What does mother worry about? How can we be sure that our foods are safe?
She worries about food safety. We can buy food from honest food traders, by pay attention to news and reports about food safety.
Handling food
1. Wash our hands properly before handling food.
2. Wash the food thoroughly.
3. Cook the food thoroughly.
4. Keep the utensils clean.
P.5
After the party, what can Sam and his family do with the leftovers?
They can either throw them away or store them properly for later consumption.
P.6
What does food last longer in sealed jars or boxes?
It is because they prevent the food from coming into contact with the moisture or bacteria in the air.
P.7
Store food in a cool and dry place so that it will last longer.
P.8
Why are there different sections in the fridge? Which has the lowest and the highest temperature?
It is because different foods need to be kept under different temperatures.
The freezer compartment has the lowest temperature, while the vegetables compartment has the highest temperature.
Why do we put these food items into the fridge?
The temperature of a fridge's fresh room is usually below 4°C, lower than that of its fresh food compartment, and is therefore suitable for keeping raw meat and the food that is easily rotten. If there is not a fresh room in the fridge, to reduce the risk of cross contamination, we should keep raw meat on the bottom shelf. Otherwise, the juice from the raw meat may drip and contaminate the cooked food below.
P.9
How do Sam and his family keep the kitchen clean?
1. Wash and store the cooking utensils and dishes properly after use.
2. Put rubbish in a lidded bin and empty it every day.
3. Keep the stove clean.
4. Keep the kitchen floor clean and dry.
How does a clean kitchen help keep food hygienic?
By keeping bacteria away.
